About Us

Project Chicken Soup (PCS) is a 501-c-3 non-profit organization that prepares and delivers free, nutritious kosher meals two Sundays each month to people living in Los Angeles with HIV/AIDS, cancer and other serious illnesses.

History:

PCS was founded in 1989, when a small group of concerned volunteers formed a group called Nechama (comfort) to prepare food baskets in a small synagogue kitchen and deliver them to people living with HIV/AIDS. By the early 1990’s, the organization, now called Project Chicken Soup, was subletting space in a commercial kitchen to provide freshly prepared, kosher meals to approximately 110 clients.

From 15 volunteers in a Hollywood synagogue kitchen, PCS has grown into a cadre of 1,500 kitchen and delivery volunteers, who gather twice each month throughout the year in our own leased commercial kitchen, to prepare and deliver nutritious, kosher meals to 125 clients. Our volunteers include students fulfilling community service requirements, volunteer groups from the faith based community, corporate world and academic institutions, and individuals and small family groups with age ranges from 2 - 92! Many of our volunteers have been with PCS for over 20 years.

In 2011, the PCS Board of Directors approved a mission expansion that broadened the target population for services to include people with HIV/AIDS, cancer and other serious illnesses that prevent them from either preparing or obtaining their own meals.

Mission Statement:

Project Chicken Soup is a non-profit organization that prepares and delivers free, nutritious, kosher meals to people in the greater Los Angeles area living with HIV/AIDS, cancer and other serious illnesses. These services are provided with love and compassion to all persons regardless of faith or religious belief.

Vision Statement:

Project Chicken Soup provides nutritious food and comfort to make a difference in the lives of people in need, serving them with dignity and respect in a nurturing environment.   We do this out of an abiding sense of love and justice, seeking to heal the world through service to humankind by providing nourishment and empowerment to those we serve.

Program Description:

PCS currently prepares and delivers freshly prepared kosher meals to 125 clients two Sundays a month, providing grocery bags containing 10 meals per delivery. We frequently deliver additional “supply bags” to clients that include nonperishable packaged food and toiletries we may have received as donations from community members, volunteers and groups, or purchased through the Los Angeles Regional Food Bank. Our partnership with Food Forward enables us to deliver fresh fruit to our clients with their food bags.

We deliver throughout Los Angeles County to neighborhoods in the Los Angeles Basin including Hollywood, West Hollywood, Silverlake, mid-city and south central areas, downtown Los Angeles, Long Beach, the San Fernando Valley and Santa Monica. Anyone living outside our delivery area may come to our kitchen to pick up meals.

The Executive Director is the only paid administrative staff, with over 1,500 volunteers accomplishing the preparation and delivery of over 30,000 meals. PCS is currently working on plans to expand the program and double our capacity. With sufficient resources, we will prepare and deliver 60,000 meals on four Sundays per month instead of two, and serve approximately 250-320 clients.

While food and nutrition services are initially the most pressing needs of our clients, we address many additional client needs. PCS has solid partnerships with other HIV/AIDS, anti-poverty and hunger relief organizations to facilitate client referrals for additional nutritional needs, case management, housing, health care, legal assistance and transportation to ensure a seamless continuum of service delivery to our clients.

During the past eight years, we have moved beyond the immediate provision of food to implement a more comprehensive response to hunger including: prevention, awareness and education, community organizing and partnerships with other community organizations involved in broad based HIV/AIDS and anti-poverty work.
